Squash Equipment

If there’s one sure fire way to get fit it’s squash as it is one of the most fast-paced of all the racket sports.  Squash will give you a great cardiovascular workout, as well as improving your stability, agility and flexibility too.

The name of the game derives from the ball (it’s squashy!) and the game itself originated from the older game of rackets at Harrow School around 1830.  Squash is played in a walled court with two or four players and the key modification made to ensure players were accommodated in its formative years was the shortening of the racket reach, which still typifies a squash racket today.

One hundred years after its invention the first British Open Squash Tournament was organised by The British Squash Rackets Association (now known as England Squash and Racketball), and the tournament continues to this day. Globally the World Squash Federation (est.1967) promotes the sport and while it is recognised by the IOC it is not currently an Olympics sport.

Squash is very popular and highly accessible here in the UK with courts available at most fitness centres, health clubs and of course squash clubs.

What’s great about the game is as well as being able to pitch yourself against a player of similar skill you can select your kit to match your style and level of play and alter this as you progress.

Rackets vary in weight distribution, dimensions, strings and so on so you can select one appropriate to your strength, speed and style of play.  Balls vary in speed (faster balls have higher bounce and are best suited to less able players) and the speed of balls from all manufacturers abide to a universally accepted coding system using coloured dots.

Typically all squash courts will insist no black soled shoes are used for the game and since you need to stop and change direction pretty quickly it makes best sense not to compromise on your footwear. There are some highly sophisticated squash shoes on the market at really competitive prices.

Goggles are also a worthwhile investment and some court operators insist they are worn so it’s worth checking before you book a court. Increasingly in the professional games players are opting to wear protection for their eyes and the WSF regulations insist junior and all doubles players must wear them in all competitions.
