MMA & Martial Arts Equipment

Find the Right MMA & Martial Arts Equipment

MMA brings together striking, grappling and different martial arts disciplines. That means your training equipment needs can vary depending on what you're practising.

Working on punches and kicks? A punch bag and suitable gloves may be a good starting point.

Training with a partner? Focus mitts and kick pads help you practise combinations, timing and accuracy.

Getting started with grappling? Choose gloves specifically designed for that activity, with the right fit and level of padding.

You don't need every piece of equipment from day one. Start with what you'll actually use and build your kit as your training develops.

Essential MMA & Martial Arts Training Equipment

MMA Gloves – Find Your Fit

MMA gloves are designed to allow greater finger movement than traditional boxing gloves, making them useful for certain striking and grappling exercises.

Different designs suit different activities. Some have less padding and prioritise flexibility, while others provide additional cushioning for selected training drills.

Always choose gloves intended for your specific activity. Competition-style gloves are not automatically suitable for sparring.

Great for: MMA training, grappling drills and discipline-specific striking practice.

Punch Bags – Put in the Work

A punch bag is one of the most versatile pieces of combat training equipment.

Use it to practise combinations, footwork, timing and conditioning. Depending on the bag's design, you can work on punches, kicks and other striking techniques.

Hanging punch bags offer a traditional setup, while freestanding models may be more convenient when permanent installation isn't practical.

Great for: Striking practice, technique drills and combat conditioning.

Focus Mitts & Striking Pads – Train Your Accuracy

Good striking isn't just about power. Timing, distance and control matter too.

Focus mitts help you work on punches and combinations with a training partner. Larger kick pads and strike shields can be used for suitable kicking drills and other techniques.

Choose equipment that matches your training style and check that it is designed to withstand the intended level of impact.

Great for: Partner drills, striking accuracy and combination training.

Muay Thai & Kickboxing Equipment

Training Muay Thai or kickboxing? The right gloves, bags and pads can help you practise a wider range of striking movements.

Longer punch bags can be useful for practising suitable kicking techniques, while Thai pads and strike shields support partner-based drills.

Look for equipment designed for the specific type of striking you plan to practise, rather than assuming all boxing products are interchangeable.

Great for: Kickboxing, Muay Thai and striking-focused workouts.

Hand Wraps & Training Accessories

Small accessories can make a big difference to your setup.

Hand wraps provide additional support beneath suitable boxing gloves, while correctly selected protective equipment is important for contact training.

Always check the rules and equipment requirements of your club or instructor before buying protective gear for sparring or competition.

Great for: Completing your training kit and preparing for organised sessions.

MMA Training Equipment for Home

You don't need a full combat sports gym to practise certain skills at home.

If you're training solo, a suitable punch bag can be useful for working on striking combinations, movement and conditioning.

A freestanding bag may be practical if you cannot install a hanging bag. If you prefer a hanging model, you'll need an appropriately rated fixing point and suitable clearance around the equipment.

For partner-based drills, focus mitts and pads add more variety, provided both people have appropriate instruction and understand how to use the equipment safely.

Remember that striking practice is only one part of MMA. Grappling, sparring and more advanced techniques are best learned in a properly supervised training environment.

How to Choose MMA Equipment

Before buying, focus on these key considerations.

Training discipline: MMA, boxing, Muay Thai and other martial arts have different equipment needs. Choose products intended for your activity.

Glove design: Check the padding, finger coverage, closure and manufacturer's intended use. Grappling, bag work and sparring can require different gloves.

Punch bag size and weight: Consider the type of strikes you'll practise, your experience and the space available. Different bag shapes and weights suit different exercises.

Training space: Make sure there's enough room to move around your equipment without hitting walls, furniture or other people.

Construction: Strong stitching, durable materials and suitable fixings are particularly important for equipment used regularly.

Protection and fit: Follow your instructor's guidance and your club's rules for gloves, mouthguards, shin guards and other protective equipment.

Experience level: Beginners may benefit from a simpler setup, while experienced practitioners may need more specialised gear for particular drills.

MMA vs Boxing Equipment: What's the Difference?

Some MMA and boxing equipment overlaps, but not everything is interchangeable.

Boxing gloves generally have more enclosed padding and are designed for boxing-specific training activities.

MMA gloves typically have open fingers and a different construction, allowing more freedom for gripping during appropriate drills.

Punch bags, focus mitts and conditioning equipment may be used across several combat sports, provided they're suitable for the intended exercise.

The important thing is to choose equipment based on what you're actually training, not just the sport printed on the label.
